What makes inlay marble flooring last for generations
Marble inlay, known in India as parchin kari and in Europe as pietra dura, is the craft of cutting thin shapes of coloured stone and fitting them into recesses carved in a marble base. When the surface is ground and polished, the pattern sits perfectly flush, so it is part of the floor rather than a layer on top. It is the same technique used on the walls of the Taj Mahal.
Because the colour runs through the stone, an inlay floor does not fade or peel. It ages with the marble around it and is usually re-polished rather than replaced, which is why a well-laid medallion can stay the centre of a home for decades.
Choosing a design starts with the room. A round medallion suits a foyer, stair hall or the space under a chandelier. A rug or border design defines a living or dining area. Wall panels and arches bring the same craft to entrances and prayer rooms, and inlay table tops carry it into everyday life.
We cut and set our inlay in Makrana on white Makrana marble. Send the room size in feet with a design code, and we will scale the pattern to fit, border included.
